Multidrug resistance (MDR) plasmids often carry antibiotic resistance genes, conferring different resistance mechanisms. We show here that the antibiotic concentration of the RK2 plasmid in E. coli depends on the social nature of resistance: the selection of selfish resistance (efflux pump) occurs at very low drug concentrations, which is only 1.3 of the plasmid MIC. % --free antibiotic-sensitive strains, and the selection of co-resistance (modified enzyme) occurs when the drug concentration exceeds the MIC of the plasmid-free strain.
